Exeter or Bust!

In a week the family and I will be heading back to ol' Blighty for an eight day vacation.  It's hard to believe that we haven't been back in ten years now.  We'll be staying down around Exeter, except for two nights in London on the way home.  If any of my British readers have any "must see's" down in the South West, I'd love to have your recommendations.

  1. You might be able to catch some legs of the Royal Marines' 350th anniversary "1664 Challenge" (www.1664challenge.co.uk) - they're doing speed marches totalling 1664 miles over a month or so. It looks as though they'll be in Cornwall next week.

If you're in London on a Monday or Thursday and fancy a game, drop me a line and I'll try to sort something out.

    1. Tamsin, the march might be very cool, if we can find it, though I have to admit I've seen a lot of Marines marching before.

I will be in London Monday night. If you can swing something, let me know. I'll be staying near Heathrow, very early flight out, and don't know my way around London at all, so it will need to be fairly easy with public transportation.

      Thank you.

  2. Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset is great. Also nearby is Maiden Castle, which is a massive Iron Age hill fort, which might / might not have been besieged by the Romans.

    1. Stuart, I didn't realize Bovington was down there. That just became a must see. SWMBO served in AMTRACs back in the day so she should be down for that. Maiden Castle shouldn't be a hard sell either, since my folks are both historians.

      Thank you.

  3. Was going to say Bovington Tank Museum is not too far from there. An absolute must. You aren't too far from Falmouth which is a very beautiful area and has a couple really cool fortresses/castles. Also an amazing Fish and Chips place on the docks.

    1. Nick, Falmouth might make it on the list. We were also told to go to Torquay, so it may be one or the other.

  4. I'll also say bovington is a must see. However if you're near torquay look up The Eden Project. Nothing to do with wargaming but definitely interesting!

    1. Torquay might be on the agenda so that's a good call. Thanks.

  5. I wouldn't bother with Torquay. Dartmouth is a much better bet. Eden project is good but miles from Torquay, closer to Falmouth. Bear in mind that the roads aren't great when busy so it may take a while getting from A to B. Dartmoor is definitely worth a day out and Castle Drogo is good for a rainy day. If you're in Exeter, remember that they rehearsed Pegasus Bridge there. Also there are Roman walls and a medieval water system which are worth a look.

    1. Thanks Kpl. I didn't know about Pegasus Bridge rehearsals or the medieval water system. More good stuff to look at.
