Last weekend the boys and I played our first game of Rangers of Shadow Deep (RoSD). This is a game from the author of Frostgrave, Joseph A. McCullough. The game came out in 2018, and I bought the rules, models and an expansion at that time, but the work on the basement meant that we couldn't get it on the table until now.
The above is our setup for the first game. I don't have any other shots but we'll play this scenario again and I'll get more pictures.
The game play is fun. It uses opposed d20 roles, so it can be very swingy, but I like that as it ensures that there is always danger. The scenarios use a card draw system for events/monsters so it has great re-play-ability because each scenario will roll out differently based on the order the cards are drawn and how your models interact with the clue and treasure tokens.
For those who don't know of the game, it is a campaign based, Role playing-light adventure game. It's model agnostic so you can use anything you have. It will give you a great excuse to pull out all of the fantasy monsters you've collected over the years. I've never had a reason to paint my giant ticks and giant beetles until now.
It also gives you the opportunity to build some bespoke terrain that is very exciting. I'm having a lot of fun planning out some pieces for the game that will be re-usable for other things.
This game is great for getting the creative juices flowing, for mixing up your model painting to get you out of a rut, and for working on terrain. It has great support from Joe himself and a really strong community on facebook.
It's also accessible for children so it's a great way to game with them. Between the easy mechanic of opposed roles and the role playing light aspect there's a lot for them to get into with it.
I recommend this game for anyone looking for something different, or who has a ton of un-used fantasy models laying around. I will also mention that there are a bunch of mods available in the Facebook group to include modern (zombie) and Star Wars mods; so the engine is pretty solid.
