Sci-Fi games need scenery. Some needs to be playable, some needs to block line of sight (LoS) and some is just there to make the table look great. I started the year with not a single piece of 15mm terrain. This made perfect sense as I didn't have a single 15mm model or any intention to collect any.

Finished Wind Chargers. Mechs and infantry sold separately. |
Happily GW pushed me off the cliff and I haven't looked back. That has meant, though, that I needed to get some terrain in a hurry. While browsing in Hobby Lobby, one day, I found a set of models designed for school children to make dioramas. The set in question was renewable energy generators and part of it was broken, so it was very cheap.
I have had these sitting on my workbench for months now. Today I finally finished them up. They will give me two pieces of scatter terrain and, perhaps, some objectives.

The bases, just because I like them. |
I mounted them onto some 60mm round bases I had laying around. I left the paint job alone and just did the bases. Total time on these is probably no more than fifteen minutes each, which totally justifies the fact that it took me at least six months to get them done.
Those are pretty cool looking. What 15mm sci-fi games do you actually play? Any you'd recommend?
ReplyDeleteI've play tested Gruntz, meaning I've run through the rules solo. I like them. They have very detailed unit building rules, allowing you to make anything you can imagine. They are quick and simple. I'm not a huge fan of the need to have a bunch of different colored d6 pairs, but I can live with it. I've also played a couple games of Tomorrow's War. This is a great game and I love the dice mechanics for skill as well as the overwatch and reactions. It's a much greater investment in brain power and rules learning though. I'm thinking of Gruntz for 15mm and TW for 28mm but we'll see. With your predilection for Infinity and for rules you might like TW.
DeleteLove your logic LOL, they do look good as well. Interesting looking towards the back of your desk at other started items, typical of a project desk I guess

I was just noticing that as well. Those two Defiance Game Marines have been sitting there for as long as the wind chargers. I think I'll finish them today. Arthur may have to wait until I have a few more Dark Age figures though.
DeleteOn the backdrop again - where are those containers from? I could use some for my SF terrain (when I eventually get round to finishing some units and vehicles).
ReplyDeleteAs for the wind turbines - good find. I always look out for stuff like that when I'm in pound shops and the like.
Sadly the containers are 28mm crates from JR Miniatures, which is shutting down production. They are good for crates in 28mm and containers, as you said, in 15mm.
DeleteI found the wind turbines with some solar panels at Hobby Lobby. I don't recall a store like that in the UK. They are for kids to do dioramas at school, so you could look at a place like that.
