Bonus round - Myth - 28mm Mumak of Harad

My entry for the myth bonus round was a Mumak of Harad for Lord of the Rings.  This is a huge model and dominates any table it is put on.

The base is amazing.
I painted this model in three parts.  The base, the oliphant and the howdah.  It took six pins to get the howdah on properly.

The base.
The base has an amazing amount of detail on it; especially for something that will be underneath a giant elephant model.  This was actually pretty terrible to paint.  Not because of a flaw in the model but because of the subject matter.  Severed limbs, dead men and horses.

The model assembled.
In the picture above you can see the size of this.  Those paint bottles are 76mm tall.  The howdah can hold 12 28mm models.

I went with yellow for the eye.  It's my go to color for "baleful gaze".
The details are amazing.  The harness looks like it would actually work.  The skin is perfect.  The facial structure is right on.

Details on the howdah.
The howdah looks great.  The wicker really takes a wash and highlight well.  There is room to place and move models around in it.  The whole thing feels plausible.

The tail has been bobbed.
The tail broke off during assembly, then broke in half again.  I decided it wouldn't survive gaming so it stayed off.  You can see how the base is lost under the giant model.

The left side.  Same as the right.
I've had this model for four years. In the end it took a couple of nights and a Saturday to get it painted.  I'm very happy with it.  Now to use it in a game.

  1. Wow! An amazing piece, Aaron! From staining, the howdah really does look like wicker.
That will certainly turn a few heads.

    Great job!

    1. Thanks Jon. I'm pleased with how it came out. I still may add some paint to the forehead but I like it the way it is too.

  2. That is utterly great, your work on the base alone was worth coming for a look. Shame about the tail but it looks fine without it

    1. Thanks Mike. I find they are usually a distraction to the enemy, at the very least.
